Who says things aren't GREAT in Groveton?
You obviously haven't heard about the 2nd annual PaddleFest
GROVETON — It's getting close to that time again. Paddlers should dust off their canoes and kayaks and start warming up for the GREAT PaddleFest on the Connecticut River on June 28.
This year, organizers have worked hard to improve the event that drew 57 boats into friendly competition in its inaugural run. After last year's modest distance produced lightning times, the racecourse has been stretched and will now span nearly 12 miles of the Connecticut River from the Janice Peaslee Bridge spanning the Stratford-Maidstone Vt. border south to the village of Guildhall, Vt. just across the riverbank from Northumberland Village.
Word has gotten out about last year's success and vendors and musicians are already lining up to join the post-race festival that is likely to draw visitors and paddlers alike as the event shares a weekend with the Old Time Fiddler's Contest at the nearby Lancaster Fairgrounds. Space on the Guildhall Common is still available for business displays, vendors and entertainers who wish to take part in the day. Anyone interested can call (603) 837-8834 or email greatpaddlefest@verizon.net.
In addition to racers, PaddleFest also encourages those who would prefer to take a leisurely float down the river. Prizes will be given for decorated boats and this year's theme is "Pioneers." Non-motorized watercraft of all kinds are welcome and racers will be split into classes depending on the type of boat. There will be a category for long kayaks (over 10-feet), short kayaks, canoe with one paddler, canoe with two paddlers and rowboats.
Registration is $10 per person with a maximum of $20 per boat if received by June 14. Those who pre-register will also receive a free PaddleFest t-shirt. After June 14 registration is $12 per person with a maximum of $24 per boat and t-shirts may be available but are not guaranteed. Registration forms can be picked up at Emerson Outdoor Outfitters in Groveton, Perras Ace Hardware in Northumberland, or the Coös County Democrat in Lancaster or request one via email from greatpaddlefest@verizon.net.
