Lets think differently about our problems

Seems like every time I mention the fact that I'm living in Berlin, NH these days, someone asks me about all the Suspicious Fires.
Lets face it, there's a lot of housing stock in Berlin that isn't worth fixing up and that would cost alot to demolish. Not surprisingly the Berlin Fire Department is getting tired of bearing the costs of their demolition in injured firefighter and overtime costs.
 
So I had a crazy idea. Lets create a general amnesty for all land lords. Under the amnesty, the landlords give to the city their list of any buildings they're considering calling in the arsonists on. Then the city could sell  the opportunity for the controlled burns to other towns for training.  Given that such training courses can cost as much as $2500 per student, seems like there's a financial opportunity there that is going unexploited.

Just trying to think different about the situation.

If you want talent, come to Coos County

I read with interest the latest Carsey Institute study of young people in Coos County. As someone who has been hiring in Coos County for the past 2 years, I can vouch for the quality and dedication of the youth in this county. I understand their frustration that there are few opportunities (I just wish we could hire MORE) but if you're looking to start or grow  a business in a place where there's a fabulous work force, cheap space and beautiful views, come to Coos County.

Not sure how I got here, but I was thrilled to find this What Do You Want To Read?? blog from the Berlin Public Library. Kudos to the library, for using a social media to make its services more accesssible.

Great clothes, great cause

The “2009 Cancer Awareness Fashion Show” hosted by Rumorz Boutique, is this Friday and the tickets are selling fast!  Please join in the fight against cancer at this fun event taking place at the White Mountain Chalet in Berlin on Friday, March 20^th.  Doors open at 6pm and the show time is 7pm.  The event’s proceeds will be donated to the local Relay for Life held in Berlin on June 19 at the White Mountains Community College. Featured at the show, will be fashions from the downtown Berlin store, Rumorz Boutique, owned by Stacia Roberge and featuring the “Elle” line from Greetings Jewelers.  The models for the fashion show include local residents and cancer survivors.  Tickets are $5.00 when purchased in advance at Greetings Jewelers, North Country Dental and Rumorz Boutique and $7.00 at the door the night of the event.  The evening will include an opening dance from the Emanuel Dance Studio,  a cancer survivor guest speaker, 50/50 raffle, door prizes, hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and always a few surprises.
