I read with some dismay this story about Berlin and Lincoln betting on gambling.
And I had to wonder, while the state is spending millions promoting the area as "grand" and featuring its beautiful scenery, its grand resort hotels, and its wholesome atmosphere isn't it a bit of a mixed message that the state now wants to bring into the area an industry that has a track record of increasing increase crime, violence, and poverty?

I have to say that being involved with the Chamber and Berlin Main St program, as a non- Berlinite! I am a bit disappointed with the perspective/perception here. In the past 3 or 4 years - a heaping handful of folks have put together some of "The Best Events" in NH and the events have been recognized for it. Why you may ask, to get people up here to visit, what we already enjoy and know.
Rebuilidng a truely depressed economy (yeah I said depressed) and geographic location takes time and ALLOT of effort. Not by a heaping handful, but many - 10 fold even! Never mind that fact that we do not have an inter-state running through here, DOT knows its more like dirt roads that happen to have pavement on them - And internet connectivity is even worse.
Why is that? You have NO voice thats why, because the sqeaking wheel gets grease, and I do not hear allot of squeaking coming from Berlin/Gorham - Do -Paul or John know your name and where you live?
So, I ask you nay sayers out there - What have you done for me (Berlin area) lately? Are you part of the solution or rather the problem?
Get involved, even if it only stooping over to pick a discarded piece of trash. Take pride in what you DO have, rather than what we do not have (Casinos, Bio-Mass Plants and tons of jobs) the power of positive thinking is powerful and contagious.
Get involved, go to planning or any sort or municipal meetings that make a differance - Yeah, Yeah we are all busy and some of these meetings will bore you to tears, but who cares right?

From my humble seat, complacency is what got the city that once was the largest in NH - The crowning jewel at the time, into this very circumstance. In addition to creating a one horse town! Think about that for a moment, that all happened in less than 80 years - One lifetime, your grand parents ejoyed the finest life had to offer back then!!!
Just food for thought!

I was surprised to see the mayor and council agreeing with the concept of a casino in Berlin. I shouldn't be, but I was. I can't see anything good coming of it for Berlin.

Gambling might bring crime, drugs and arsons to Berlin too! Berlin is such a wholesome Welfare community it doesnt need jobs or reconstruction or new customers for downtowne shops... All Berlin needs are flower boxs...
