Sound familiar?

I was listening to this segment on NHPR this morning about  how Michigan's UP'ers (residents of the Upper Penisula" are hard working, friendly folks that are surviving the economy by toughing it out,
and it occurred to me that they could as easily have been talking about Coos County. The  UP is routinely left off of maps and left out of discussions. It is seen as a separate and radically different part of Michigan, and it occurred to me that the part of New Hampshire that is north of the Notches is just as different from Salem and Portsmouth as Detroit is from the U.P. Maybe we should rebrand ourselves the way UPers did. NoNers doesn't quite have the same ring. Maybe NCers -- (rhymes with Snickers) --  the ad campaign could encourage people to "Get into our ... "  maybe not.. Other ideas anyone?"

Go climb a mountain -- and discover Berlin in the process

Okay, full disclosure -- I'm part of a team effort to promote the natural wonders of Berlin, NH -- but I LOVE the fact that newcomers to the area are discovering all the cool things you can do here -- like this: Berlin NH- a rock climbing destination

One of the things we love most about the North Country...

Grab your kids if you got ‘em, significant others if you can stand ‘em (haha) and some containers for picking your own apples. Whether it’s a bushel basket or a plastic bag it should be a good time and the apple pies and crisps sure will taste good! If you are interested in packing a picnic lunch, there’s a nice spot in Gilead on the right just after where you’d turn off to get to the Orchard.

 

Gibson’s has over 40 varieties on  dwarf and Semi Dwarf Trees to pick from. It’s handicap accessible, flat and easy to drive right in. They have apple picking poles for the little ones. They also sell fresh pressed cider, Gib Bees Honey, Maine Maple Syrup and let you have a taste of one thing or another while you are there.

Directions: Take Rt. 2 to Gilead, ME from Gorham (if you are coming from Berlin go straight, if you are coming up 16 you’ll turn right when you get into Gorham or you can take Rt 113 up from Fryeburg and turn right onto Rt2 in Gilead). Once in Gilead, turn left at apple sign, go over railroad tracks, over river bridge, turn right, go 7.58 miles to apple signs. Follow signs to orchard.

Rail could be a great boost to Coos' tourism effort

This story about the possibility of extending train service from Boston thru Concord and up to Berlin is a great idea. The tracks are there, and roads are a constant issue in the North Country. Why not bypass the highways altogether and ride a train to the North Country?
